Philanthropy

  • The Alpha Alpha Chapter is proud of the commitment it has made to the surrounding community through philanthropic efforts.  Below are brief descriptions of several activities the Alpha Alpha Chapter takes part in to support the community.  Updated details of the Chapter's involvement can be found in the newsletter.

    Kappa Cookout

Kappa Cookout is a traditional fundraiser for Pi Kappa Alpha. Historically taking place in the fall, Greek organizations that contain the letter Kappa are invited to co-sponsor the event. The cookout, which is catered and features a live band, takes place on the Wannamaker patio and is open to all Duke students who purchase a ticket. Proceeds from tickets to the event, koozies, and t-shirts are split between the sponsoring organizations’ chosen charities. Pi Kappa Alpha donates its share of the proceeds to its national philanthropy, the American Cancer Society.

    Other Involvement

CARE for Carter-  Two of our members, Mike Lyngaas and Connor Bevans, run the CARE for Carter Physical Education program, which recruits volunteer Duke students to teach PE class to elementary school students.  They have managed to recruit several Pike Brothers to join them teaching at Carter Elementary- over 15 Brothers have volunteered over the last year.  They are actively trying to expand the program to other elementary schools using a generous alumni donation to the Alpha Alpha Chapter, specifically for philanthropy geared toward adolescents.  We hope to create a permanent Pike run PE program at a local elementary school with the funding.  Another current goal of the program is a new playground; Pike has already begun plans to raise the necessary funds (or build, if necessary) this well-needed public playground for local residents.

Habitat for Humanity, Durham-  Pi Kappa Alpha is in constant contact with the Durham Habitat for Humanity, offering labor in support of all local construction projects.  The Chapter continually remains in good-standing with Habitat's Community Development projects.

Durham Arts Council Centerfest Arts Festival-  The Alpha Alpha Chapter brothers started volunteering at this annual event this past year.  Our main service was physical labor in both set-up and clean up.  The event featured over 150 different artists, both in the visual and performance fields, in support of the growing cultural diversity of Durham.
